In a pickle
When I was 14 I did a lot of babysitting. One of the perks of babysitting is getting to raid other people’s fridges.
The first time I ever came across “Bread and Butter pickles” was while I was babysitting. With a name like that, I figured the idea was, you butter some bread and then put the pickles inside to make a sandwich.
Stop laughing.
I really like my bread and butter pickle sandwiches. (I still don’t know why they are called Bread and Butter pickles.)
If you think that’s weird, how about this: Mark, who hails from England, likes crisp (potato chip) sandwiches. This involves spreading your bread with mayonnaise and using potato chips for filling. Ugh. Ok, if I’m honest, it tastes pretty good, but the idea is seriously ugh. The funny thing is, Mark thinks peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are a) strange b) gross.
Now, how about you? Any slightly strange delicacies you’d like to share?

I couldn’t really think of any of my own, but my sister swears that Wendy’s fries dipped in one of those chocolate Frosty drinks taste just wonderful.

My dad used to make us peanut butter, lettuce & Miracle Whip sandwiches on toast. BEST SANDWICH EVER!
February 18th, 2005 at 7:47 pm
Peanut butter and apple sandwiches. I think they’re completely normal, but others seem to think they’re gross.
February 18th, 2005 at 11:57 pm
my mom eats banana sandwiches. ick.
when i was in elementary school, it was so hip to pour ranch dressing on pizza. ew.
February 19th, 2005 at 4:14 am
Ew, crisp sandwiches doesn’t sound delicate to me. Maybe I should try it anyway

As an ex-Wendy’s lackey, I can vouch for the fries and frosty mix.
My thing used to be ketchup spread on toast. Not that I ever ate that when babysitting. I’d raid their cupboards for the good stuff like oreo cookies, chocolate, or funky kid-size snacks.
(Now, I’ve got a terrible craving for a chip butty. Thanks! We don’t have bread, fries, OR a deep fryer full of week-old oil!)

My sister used to eat mayonaisse sandwiches and I used to eat mustard sandwiches but my vote for the gorssest combo *I* have ever heard of is peanut butter and cheese. Ick!!! Childhood friends, though, used to swear by toasted velveeta and grape jelly sandwiches. I never was brave enoughh to try it.
Love love LOVE your blog! Once I get out of blog explosion and figure how to blogroll you to mine, I will! Great job here!

Our shitastic Shitmaster Jeckles has noted that your SBC link is woefully out of date and commanded that you be shit-slapped. Update your damn Shitty Blogs Club link! The site moved to http://shittyblogsclub.blogcafe.com/shittyblogsclub/ forever ago! What are you waiting for? Update! Update!
February 19th, 2005 at 11:36 am
I thought that having a broken button made my blog just that much shittier. But fine, I fixed the shitty thing. Shit!
February 19th, 2005 at 11:37 am
I’m here because the Shitmaster said to bother you because your SBC link is out of date,
but now that I’m here and read about the bread and butter pickle sandwiches, I’m
hungry, so I’m going to see if I can find any pickles in the fridge. Thanks for the idea.

what in gods name are bread and butter pickles?
crisp sandwiches are lovely - but use butter not mayo!
February 20th, 2005 at 6:42 am
I adore Bread & Butter pickles… especially on a toasty grilled cheese sandwich. Though I believe I will have to try them with nothing but butter and bread.

The term “bread and butter” pickles actually comes from
Sweden’s “smorgasbord” which means “bread and butter table.”
My favorite sandwich, devised by me, is two slices of Portuguese sweet bread, peanut butter, a touch of marshmallow fluff, strawberry preserves, crisply-fried bacon, and a couple of cranks of fresh black pepper. Brush a hot skillet lightly with butter and toast the sandwich on both sides till golden. Cut on the bias and serve with a glass of cold milk.
I give weird a bad name.

z - thank you
c’lam - bread and butter pickles are um, well, they look like the ones you get in a burger, but they are sweet
golfwidow - thank you for solving the mystery, I’ve always wondered. Oh, and even though it wasn’t a contest. You win

I love crisps sandwiches! Not so keen on the bread and butter pickles in a sandwich but egg salad, beetroot and onion is my all-time fave sandwich. My name is ms. mac and I’m a sandwichaholic.

Yummy ! Crisp sarnies should have butter not mayo !
My favourite sandwich id Marmite ( vegemite) with cheese … then toasted ….drools !
February 20th, 2005 at 3:49 pm
Peanut butter and jam - the idea grosses me out too, but crisp sarnies are yummy, chip butties, fish finger sandwiches, salad cream sandwiches, and creme de la creme, dad’s sauce sandwiches.

Marmite/vegemite and chip (crisp) sandwiches, jam and whipped cream sandwiches, black pudding
sandwiches. Yum!

that’s great! I love to make sandwiches filled with Frito corn chips. They’re the best!!

Try pickled beats on a toasty spread of Nutella!
Gives you just the right kind of kick in the morning.

I was always a fan of the cold mayo (Hellmans ONLY) and peanut butter.
Less viscous gloop gives the more viscous gloop less gloopsity.

Nutella on bread — AKA chocolate and hazelnut sandwiches. YECCH!

Okay, here’s an easy recipe that I swear sounds nasty, but humor me. I always get compliments from people who try it. I try not to tell them about the “secret” ingredient though.
Take a rectangle pyrex baking dish, the kind you use to make brownies in or whatever
Take a box of Twinkies (the “secret ingredient”), cut them in half, lengthwise
Place one layer of Twinkies in the dish, cream side up
Layer drained mandarin oranges and peeled pomelo grapefruit slices on top of Twinkies
Spread layer of Cool Whip on top of fruit slices
Repeat with the other halves of the Twinkies, and “frost” with Cool Whip.
It’s so trashy, I know, but it’s pretty good in that “I don’t care about nutrition but hell, it has fruit in it” kinda way.

Bologna and cream cheese on white bread sandwich.
I know, gross, right? But hey, a bachelor had to eat, and now I love it. Try it if you dare!
… Nutella on bread is great!! Parisians eat it for breakfast every day.

Dawn: A Frito sandwich must be the American equivalent of the crisp Sandwich. Dunno if there is a Canadian version though.
Shawn: You win second place in the non-contest
Procrasto: You win third
Kevin: Your concoction doesn’t sound too weird, lots of people like Nutella…except me. Hazelnuts, ewwwwwwwwwwwww.
Mags: That sounds like my kind of cooking. Not sure if it’s my kind of eating though.
Jonathan: Sounds just fine to me

I like to put french fries on my cheeseburgers at McDonalds. Soooo good.
February 22nd, 2005 at 4:29 am
My favorite as a kid was peanut butter, jelly and onion sandwiches. My mother loves peanut butter, mayo and pickle sandwiches.
February 22nd, 2005 at 11:19 am
A Canadian version of these English and American delights could be a Timbit and smoked meat poutine.
February 23rd, 2005 at 3:05 pm
Not sure if you’re familiar with devils on horseback: dates wrapped in bacon then cooked and served as appetizers. They sound really nasty to everyone when they first hear about them but once they’re given a try they are delish!
February 24th, 2005 at 1:56 pm
Woo Hoo! Second place!
February 28th, 2005 at 1:22 am
Mac and cheese with garlic and ketchup.
March 1st, 2005 at 6:03 pm
fresh white bread, with sliced dill pickles
March 1st, 2005 at 6:06 pm
Because my parents would not buy us Nutella, I would put broken Easter egg chocolate on Weston bread.
March 5th, 2005 at 12:18 am
Found your site while checking to see if anyone else ate garlic and Nutella sandwiches.

um….i know this was a while ago

but i just had to say
when i was about 14
i tried to “deep fry” french fries
(we always cooked them in the oven)
but i didn’t know you were supposed to put them in oil
so
i put them in water
and boiled the hell out of them…
heh heh…
it took me a long time to get over that one
