New Zealand - Day 8
We headed out early from Whitianga for the drive to Rotorua. The day started dreary and cloudy but brightened up as we drove. Jen smelled the sulphur before I did as we arrived in Rotorua, a town on top of huge geothermal activity. We pulled into the Ascot Motel (recommended by Bill at the Oceanside Motel) and booked into a nice suite with a private spa bath (heated by the thermal vents). As we only had the afternoon left we decided to walk around town. We walked down to Lake Rotorua then into the Government Gardens, where the old have been restored to working condition and the Rotorua Museum explores local history and art.
Back at the motel we walked to the local supermarket and picked up enough groceries to last us our three day stay here, including some fejoias, a tasty local fruit.
